This year, Karwa Chauth is celebrated on October 20. The festival is important because it ends with a fast that starts when the moon is visible. This year, the moon will be up from about 9:30 PM to 10:05 PM. Karwa Chauth is mainly celebrated in the north of India and is a symbol of deep love and devotion. It's usually a day when married women fast from sunrise to when the moon comes up, hoping for their husbands' long life and health. However, nowadays, men also join in to support their wives and fast with them.

The Origins

The name 'Karwa' refers to a clay pot, and 'Chauth' is the fourth day. This tradition involves women giving 'Argya' to the moon with a clay pot on the fourth day of Kartik, a month in the Hindu lunar calendar. Karwa Chauth is celebrated on this day, which can vary between October and November in the English calendar.

What is Karwa Chauth?

Karwa Chauth is an ancient Indian festival celebrated on the fourth day after the full moon in the Hindu month of Kartik. The word "Karwa" refers to a clay pot, and "Chauth" signifies the fourth day. This day is marked by women observing a rigorous fast from sunrise to moonrise, praying for their husband's well-being and longevity.

Rituals of Karwa Chauth

  • Sargi: The Pre-Dawn Meal - The fast begins before sunrise with a meal known as Sargi. This meal is prepared by the mother-in-law and is meant to provide women with the strength to endure the day-long fast. It typically includes fruits, sweets, and other nourishing foods, along with a glass of water or milk.
  • The Day-Long Fast - Once the Sargi is consumed, women refrain from food and water until they can sight the moon at night. This fast symbolizes their love and commitment to their husbands and is an incredible display of devotion. Many women engage in prayers and chants throughout the day, seeking blessings for their husbands.
  • The Evening Puja - As the day comes to an end, women gather to perform a special puja (prayer ritual) dedicated to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. They set up a thali (plate) adorned with a diya (lamp), sweets, and the Karwa (pot). The women take turns to pray, singing
